Lockout/Tag Out Training

Many employees operate machines that must be shut down, locked out, and tagged during cleaning, servicing, and adjusting operations, but there is an exception for operations that require the machine to be in motion, or that are minor, routine, and repetitive during normal production operations. Those operations must be performed using extension tools or other methods that effectively protect employees from injury. Employees must be thoroughly trained on the safe use of such tools and methods and the training must be documented. When OSHA investigates whether an injured employee was properly trained, the rule of thumb is, “if it’s not in writing, it did not happen.”
